  After 8 long years of Bush - a fresh start. The world is seizing this historic and hopeful moment to send a flood of global messages to Obama. Our message and number of signers as well as the personal messages sent are displayed on a large wall in the centre of Washington DC (pictures, right).

Uribe: Dialogue, not Violence!

On Monday October 20th we launched a campaign in support of the indigenous groups protesting in Cauca. In 3 days more than 16,000 people across Latin America have sent messages to President Uribe to call on him to halt the violence against indigenous protesters and to sit down with them for talks. On Wednesday evening President Uribe publicly admitted that a police officer had shot live bullets against the indigenous protesters. On Thursday, President Uribe personally called one of the organizers of the demonstrations saying he would meet them on Sunday.

The indigenous people have been pushed of their lannd by armed groups and just in the last year 22 of their leaders were killed. Uribe's decision is a significant victory for Colombia's indigenous people and for our campaign, recognised in news reports as having contributed to their struggle. Now the talks must tackle the grievances which fed the violence.
