Uribe: Dialogue, not Violence!
|
On Monday October 20th we launched a campaign in support of the indigenous groups protesting in Cauca. In 3 days more than 16,000 people across Latin America have sent messages to President Uribe to call on him to halt the violence against indigenous protesters and to sit down with them for talks. On Wednesday evening President Uribe publicly admitted that a police officer had shot live bullets against the indigenous protesters. On Thursday, President Uribe personally called one of the organizers of the demonstrations saying he would meet them on Sunday.
The indigenous people have been pushed of their lannd by armed groups and just in the last year 22 of their leaders were killed. Uribe's decision is a significant victory for Colombia's indigenous people and for our campaign, recognised in news reports as having contributed to their struggle. Now the talks must tackle the grievances which fed the violence. Please read the IPS article linked on our blog post for an analysis of the situation and how Avaaz members helped: http://www.avaaz.org/blog/en/
Message to Presidente Uribe and Colombian Ministers:
I am writing to ask you to stop the violence against indigenous groups, and to meet with indigenous leaders to discuss their grievances concerning their fundamental human rights to life and land. Thanks to all of those who took action! |
